Ladies & Gentlemen
Has anybody used the Pro-Edge to sharpen HSS cutting tools for a metal turning lathe?
If so, how do you set the various angles for Rake and Relief?
It seems a waste NOT to use the Pro-Edge - since one already owns one.
I look forward to reading your comments and suggestions

Hello everyone and mods. Doing my research for metal lathes. Can anyone give me advice on which one to buy? I have been searching on which brand is good to buy. I have read a lot of reviews but I'm more confused right now. I have this one review I'm interested at, So can you please tell me which metal lathe is good to buy in this review? www.jenreviews.com/best-metal-lathe/Thank you.

Confused enough about the various merits of wood turning lathes, metal work has many more variables involved. It all depends on the minimum and maximum you need it to do.
This forum has kind of dwindled into unused anyhow, as well as being predominantly about wood not metal, so I think you may need to ask elsewhere and before you do figure out what your expected use will be.

I would say, be vary careful not to put much credence in the review you cited above. Note that it is full of unwarranted superlatives and over-statement of simple matters. Also - and just as an example of the dubious quality of advice given there - metal lathes are NOT for hammering on, contrary to what the reviewer says. Hello, I'm researching the metal lathe to buy one. I read the article latheexperts.com/top-5-best-metal-lathe/ and see the Grizzly G0602 seems the best to own. Is anyone using this lathe and can I an advice? Thanks

I look forward to reading your comments and suggestions MC I haven't tried it yet but my theory is you set the table angle and use a small miter gauge (I have one off another machine type) and that will set the rake to what you want, you will have to adjust the set up to get the cutting edge you want and use the table angle for the top relief which may need some freehand for the 2nd angle. Most recommend 10 deg clearance and the pro edge has a top end setting of 15 deg, considering carbide turning cutters are typically 30 deg I think that is close enough. If you want a round point free hand is how you will do it.
Skew jig may work to get close to what you want, personally I would want less than a 90 deg angle if turning a square shoulder but carbide tools now tend to ignore that.
Old thread but it may be useful to someone.

I have watched a skilled machinist sharpen lathe cutters with an ordinary home shop grinder. I have no doubt a skilled machinist could do the same with a Pro Edge.
I would suggest you find a small local machine shop. Offer to pay them for teaching you how to sharpen lathe cutters with your Pro Edge. The Pro Edge is auite portable. It would be time and money well spent. You would also develop a contact with a machine shop, a valuable contact.
