I have seen Diamond Belts available for the Pro Edge has anyone used one and are they as good as they should be?
Standard Belts do not last as long as I was expecting.

what are you sharpening that cant be dealt with by the 60g ceramic out of interest? I've not used the diamond belts as they're clearly very expensive and I have no need to justify them. Have used the Trizact for bench planes and chisels and I like them. Doesn't really help your question mind :-)

Hi Richard, I have been using a diamond belt for about 6 months and find it great. I get a really fine edge on any gouge it will also sharpen T.C.T cutters. Great!!!

Marty
I have had mine for just under a month now and quite surprised just how much better it is than the standard belts, I thought my tools were sharp now they are scary sharp.
Not only that there are no sparks and no discolouration of the tool edge due to the low operating temperature.
How do you clean the belt? mine is already a dirty grey colour caused by the retained metal that is removed from the tools.
Perhaps Robert Sorby can answer that one.

Hi laymarcrafts
The easiest way to sharpen the diamond belt is to take it off and wash it with a scrubbing brush using warm water and a little detergent.
Hope this helps
All the best

Good morning MCB
Thank you for your valid question.
The price difference between the Ceramic and Diamond belts isn't just about them being 20 times better.
As laymarcrafts and Marty says they give an incredible edge which to many people is more than justification for the premium price.
The fact that the Diamond belts will give a sharp edge to materials that the other abrasive belt materials will not even touch such as ceramic blades and Tungsten carbide (as Marty also mentions) is also one of the main reason for them being available.

When comparing the two options of Diamond and Ceramic it is not just about one is 20 times more expensive than the other.
You have to consider a number of factors:
Cost to obtain, in my case if I wanted to buy directly then my nearest, guaranteed, source entails a 104 mile round trip which incurs a cost for the journey and time.
If I order via the internet then I have to add postage to the cost, but because the diamond belt exceed the trigger value for free delivery i do not incur any additional cost.
As I am a busy turner and do not want to hang around in the house waiting for a delivery rather than being at the bottom of the garden turning in my shed. A missed delivery often entails a visit to the post office to collect, more wasted time.
As already stated the diamond belt will sharpen materials that other belts will not touch.
With the diamond belt you get very low heat generation and no blueing of the cutting edge which is undesirable.
I turn on average 50 to 60 items a week this means a lot of visits to the Pro Edge, and consequently the replacement of Dull belts in my opinion was too often, only time will tell if the diamond belt lasts 20 times longer, although I would be happy if it is only 15 times better taking into account the added costs to the base price for the alternative.
I do not regret the investment, and anyway I can always put one on my Christmas or Birthday list.

but the ability to sharpen carbide is a big plus because don't forget, apart from the fact that other abrasives wont scratch it meaning you have little choice anyway. The mean time between sharpens for carbide is way longer than HSS so your diamond belt should get less wear.
