After buying a second hand Jet lathe with accessories last week I have been building up equipment to start pen turning. I have an interest in collecting fountain pens and this seems a worthwhile extension. A few days ago I bought the ProEdge Plus system from my nearest dealer G&S Timber Specialists near Penrith. Unfortunately there couldn't tell me much about the system, I don't know if I caught them on a bad day and specialist staff with a more in depth knowledge were not around. I also bought the Micro Spindle set as this seemed the best option for pen turning. It was later that day after reading a bit more I realised I might need the PESPC short tool platform and arm. I headed back and got this the next day along with the long grind jig and the pro-set. I got some large old chisels with the lathe that have seen better days! The question is, what is the best way to sharpen the Micro Spindle Set which consists of a 1/2" roughing gouge, 1/2" spindlemaster (The RS site shows a skew chisel and not a spindlemaster) and a 1/16" parting tool. Is the standard platform small enough if not and I have to use the short tool platform, then how do I use jigs such as standard gouge jig. Either way, what would be the best way to sharpen the 1/2" spindlemaster as there doesnt seem to be a jig for any platform that will cover this tool. I haven't installed my ProEdge system yet, still sorting the workshop (garage) out.
Also. Does anyone know what RPM the motor runs at for polishing and burnishing wheel use. Is it worth getting these additions or invest in something more dedicated to that task. Same question really for the knife sharpener. I suppose having invested this much in a sharpening system I want to get the most out of it.

Rob,
Sorry for the delay in replying.
First, to your SpindleMaster. You should sharpen the SpindleMaster by lapping the top of the tool only. Shouldn't need to touch the bevel at all. The bright polish finish on the tool is a big part of what makes it work, so leave that alone and sharpen the flat side on a honing stone.
Most short tools will require the PESPC short tool platform. Unfortunately, the jigs do not work with the short platform, but on the brighter side, small tools are generally easy to do freehand and require less precision than larger tools.
The motor runs about 3500 rpm. I find the honing wheel to be one of my favorite accessories, particularly for carving tools and detail turning tools.

I am having the same problems using micro modular and short chisels. The micro ones I just remove the handle and hold the blade, but my sets of pen turning chisels keep catching on the lower steel bar. I bought the short shelf but as said before, there is no slot for the rests and angles, which is a pain.....I'm trying to work out if I can make a guide or something as I'm useless at freehand.

I had the same questions but I popped in to the Robert Sorby HQ and the said to use some of the jigs the square and and guage jig you can run them along the front of the short tool platform just be careful. And it works I use the micro tools and found that it works but the spindle master and parting tool had to do by hand.
