These are quick release for drumset/kit cymbals stands. 'Tama QC8' After grinding down the sides slightly so they grab the thread sufficiently they work really well
Speeds up the removal and refitting of the side guard, less tempting to leave the side guard off. Most good musical instrument stores would stock these.

I have just ordered some to try it out, mind you it is only a couple of spins on the existing wing nuts, so not going to save much once you have everything profiled to the proedge you only change belts after an accident!

Reading this post, do others have trouble getting the guard off? To get it over the studs the table edge gets in the way and you have to wiggle it get it out. I’ve already lost the red paint at this point. I was tempted to cut slots but until I get my machine working properly I’m a bit loathed to make any mods. Seems one of the least well worked out aspects of the design.

Hello Rich,
I've done just that (cut slots) and I will post details later, but you are wise not to carry out any mods until your belt wobble problem is resolved. There is an earlier thread which you may have seen, where belt "thumping" was experienced - this was solved by changing the belt. You have tried that and the fault remained.
I mentioned the zirconium belts because I have used them to sharpen HSS twist drills, with excellent results. They also work well when using the machine to square up brass and aluminium. All in all a very versatile machine, I only wish I had discovered it years ago!

It takes a wiggle or two especially if the table is at 80° / 90° but to be honest no it really doesn't take much effort to remove and refit the guard. I did try the drumset clamp trick, but they were more fiddly than the screws in my view so I have gone back to the screws. Also all my tools are profiled and I have the diamond belt on 99% of the time so seldom need to take the guard plate off.

I can’t see why the table wraps round the right hand edge of the belt either, what sharpening task do you need this part of the table for? I’ve been changing the belts a lot with my issues so it’s probably exaggerating the problem but the number of times I’ve dropped the little thumbscrews under the bench has caused a few expletives!

Any item which I drop - accidentally - in my workshop, mysteriously disappears on hitting the floor! With slots in the guard plate and thin washers under the thumbscrews, there is no need to remove these, I just unscrew approx 2 turns to release the guard. Re-fitting is as easy. So no more fruitless searches for dropped thumbscrews. On the question of the table design with the right hand "wraparound" projection, I too was unable to find a use, so cut mine off - it makes belt changing quick and easy. Am hoping the Sorby rep can comment on this feature. (It may well of course suit some sharpening procedures - an internet search came up a firm which makes a large wraparound table for the Pro Edge. Used for knife manufacture is the intended purpose. Interesting!)

Does anyone have or know where the "slots" modification to the guard is pictured on the forum?

Yes sir, Go to search in the top menu bar. Use the word "Slots" in the "single word" page. That, then, will bring up what you want. Jim

I’ve had my pro edge for nearly four years it’s been faultless which I would expect for it’s priced and quality taking the safety guard of I found a pain especially when dropping the retainer bolts so I’ve modified mine with a length of piano hinge pop riveted on and a small O ring to hold the bolts in place .
I can’t seem to be able to put the pictures on here to show the modifications?

Hi Mick, that sounds like a good mod. if you click REPLY on the right side of the screen rather than quick reply you will be able to add pictures. To be honest since I moved to the Diamond belt the guard hardly ever comes off as I don't need to change belts unless I hit a nail or drop a gouge!
