Hi. I'm a fairly new turner. I bought my proedge and use it to sharpen my gouges and skew. Can someone please tell me what angles I should set for scrapers and also for parting tools? Thanks

Hi Catherine, This is a question I asked when starting out. I think the answers is 25 degrees for the Sorby Diamond Parting tool but I’m sure all the angles are shown on the device. I along with many other people have been watching Martin Sabin-Smith’s live demos on YouTube. He is doing one next week on the ProEdge. Here is a link to his diary of events. There is one coming up for basic bowl turning which should be full of tips. www.msabansmith.com/corona-schedule/I’m looking forward to getting some of my questions answered. Kind Regards

Hi Catherine,
The answer is what works for you...
Parting Tools: Mine are all different, I have a 6mm parting tool at 35° a 3mm one at 25° (which was confirmed by Clive from Sorby to be as supplied) a 1mm one which has a 50° angle on top and a 30° angle on the bottom, I also have the Sorby fluted parting tool which I seldom use and just sharpen the flat edge to what it was, nearly! having recently sharpened it I have made it 25° I think it was closer to 23° when I started!
Recently having realised I had so many different angles in use I asked on the AWGB forum what other people used and why, basically everyone has slightly different and the why is just because that is what works for them.
Scrapers: I am mostly favouring negative rake scrapers these days and am playing with different angle compilations so again all different. BUT my big standard scrapers are done at a clearance angle of 80° and a touch at 90° to form the cutting edge. My favoured negative rake on bigger tools is 15° top and 60° clearance smaller ones I am going 15° each side, the logic (that is not a word often applied to my thinking) being that I want max weight and support on big tools, and I can't be arsed to adjust the table on lightweight ones!
What angle are yours?
