The cylindrical base part of the jig has a threaded hole in one of the ends, does anybody know the purpose of this please?

Not a thing. It's a part of the manufacturing process.

If we are thinking of the same thing then it's used with a small grub screw to fasten it to the horizontal round bar used with the sorby toolrest system for bench grinders. The round bar then moves from side to side within the walls of the toolrest when using the fingernail profiler with it. Doesn't serve any purpose with the pro-edge though as there the round bar on the machine is fixed and the large jig cylinder slides along it instead of being fastened to it. Of course we might be talking about different things in which case ignore the above ! Cheers, Paul

Well, even "factory trained" people can learn here on the forum! I must admit, the toolrest systems aren't widely distributed in the U.S., and I had not seen that operation. Thanks, Paul!

Sorry to appear so dense, but what is a fingernail profiler jug?

It's an attachment for the ProEdge sharpening system to put a fingernail shape on bowl gouges and spindle gouges.
