So I bought a ProEdge Deluxe Was infuriated that the ProEdge Angle Set is not included, it's also silly money for a bit of bent mild steel! however I just treated it as a part of the base price and stumped up the cash. My concern / question is that the backplate behind the belt had actual grooves in it it is extremely poorly finished is this the case with all of them, or do I have a faulty one? Attachments:

I had expected it to be a at least machined to a completely flat surface, even mirror polished when new, given that it needs to support the belt evenly behind the all important bevel, with minimal friction to the back of the belt.

Mine is smooth.
Yours looks like a piece of scrap passing off as a backplate.
I would get it replaced

Sent the photo to sales email and got a very quick reply asking for my address to send out replacement parts. Not had a bad product from Robert Sorby before, but the customer service looks to be excellent as usual.

Received new back plate and tool rest plate today, fitted them cleaned the face with white spirit and added a coat of machine lubricating wax. and now it makes tools sharp.
Big thank you to Paul at Robert Sorby for identifying and resolving the problem so quickly.
