The ProEdge certainly makes for easy, quick and accurate sharpening. My only comment is that when using it, there is a noticeable thump each time the belt joint passes under the work piece.
The belts do not appear to have a noticeable ridge at the joint, I'm only exerting light pressure and I have made sure they always run in the right direction. The tools are sharpened, however it's a somewhat disconcerting having the thump thump thump.
Is there anyway of lessening this?
Many thanks Noel

Hi Noel, I will pass on your comment to our ProEdge expert. With your consent I will ask him to email you. It doesn't sound like anything to worry about and imagine it's a quick fix...perhaps the belt's running off centre? The factory is on annual stock check at the moment so may be early next week before you hear from him. Hope that's OK.
Look forward to your reply

Noel I too have had this situation and have been successful in lessening the thump as you call it.
Firstly I put a small bevel on the leading and trailing edge of the Back Plate.
I believe the thump is from the joint tape catching on the square edge of the back plate as fitted, this can also sometimes raise a edge on the joint tape which will also result in a thump.
In my opinion if the thump is created at the point below the tool being sharpened then the tool would bounce? and be difficult to control.
I also regularly clean the back plate using a fine abrasive pad to remove the residue that can build up.

Many thanks for the replies.
I did try to eliminate the thump, but must admit I didn’t try bevelling the edges.
The main problem wasn’t really the noise, but the tool jumping, (admittedly very small amount) backwards. I found this made it more difficult to smoothly rotate the tool and get a correct profile. Probably with more experience I would have overcome this, but talking to members of the turning club I’ve joined and inspecting the club ProEdge revealed that the belt tension on mine was significantly less.
A phone call to the ever helpful ‘Paul’ resulted in him sending a replacement, the difference was very noticeable, there is still a low level tick, which I accept is normal for a belted machine, but the tool movement is no longer present.
The result, one happy customer. Now I can concentrate on on making things, which I must admit I’m really enjoying.
So many thanks
Noel
