I might be asking a loaded question here. I'm hoping I can determine if a Pro Edge sharpener is appropriate for using on palm size carving tools and gouges?
I'm probably taking a different approach than most of the folks here, in that I am doing relief cutting for artistic printing purposes. In other words, carving wood and linoleum blocks that will be inked and run through my printing press. A typical material I would be working on would be a Baltic Birch faced ¾” plywood. Most of my tools are palm style Pfeil gouges, parting V, veiners and knives. My primary focus is in the type of line that I'm creating and how it will appear in my artwork. Everything from broad straight ones to very delicate and curving. The wood itself is just the medium and I'm not looking to get highly finished surfaces or anything like that.
It seems that the sharpener is primarily directed towards larger size tools. Am I correct in that assumption? And are the small tools, in the low mm sizes I use now, even something that should be sharpened on it? Right now I use a Flex Cut slipstrop system to get an edge on them. Is that sufficient or am I missing out by not having these fully sharpened? In my mind I would occasionally sharpen them and then maintain them with the slipstrop while I'm working.
Your thoughts and or recommendations please??
Thanks!!!

Hello Tony
The Robert Sorby ProEdge can be used to sharpen any type of edge tool.
Having such a large variety of abrasive belts to choose from allows any type of material Carbon steel, high speed steel and even tungsten carbide to be sharpened.
The belts are available in a variety of materials...
There are Aluminum Oxide, Zirconium, Ceramic, Trizact and Diamond
There is also a choice of grit sizes depending on the type of steel being sharpened, which material belt is used and what is required...whether it is repair and re-shape, general sharpening or honing and fine polishing
The grits sizes are 60, 120, 240, 600, 1200 & 3000
As well as the abrasive belts there is also a buffing mop and a honing wheel available for the ProEdge which are favoured by carvers.
The honing wheel is a hard compound rubber impregnated with a very fine abrasive to get a great cutting edge together with a polished finish to the bevel.
The buffing mop is a loose leaf cotton mop to which a very fine honing paste is added to give a razor sharp cutting edge and a mirror finish to the bevel of carving tools.
I hope this information is useful to you
Regards
Clive
