Hi all, this may be a silly question on my part, but how would I add a secondary relief bevel to a gouge, using the pro edge? For example I have a 55 degree bowl gouge with fingernail swept back grind, but want to add a relief bevel (I’m thinking of about 45 degrees)? Thank you

When you say a "relief" bevel I assume you mean a second bevel
what I do is I grind the 55 fingernail
and then slide the gouge further into the holder (hence the back of the bevel now hits he belt) and I grind a second not very fingernail sweep bevel here
this has the effect of knocking off the back of the bevel
hope that makes sense
my notes would say 3/8 gouge - 45 deg on hole A (I label A as closet to belt and C as furthest - I have a 3 hole jog holder ) and then 35 deg on hole A
when I use hole C I might keep the same angle but move to hole B or A to grind of that back sharpe bevel

If you mean a leading edge micro bevel that is more for hand sharpening bench chisels than turning gouges. The ProEdge creates the bevel so quickly the micro bevel is not needed.

Hiya Pete, apologies if my terminology is not great. I was looking for what Francis has described. So a secondary bevel to help support a bowl gouge when going from the side round to the bottom, with a clean ‘bevel supported’ cut.

To shorten the bevel which I often do, the angle is unimportant as you are aiming to never put it on the cut. I concentrate on getting my cutting edge, then slip the tool forward in the jig and just take most of the heal away
