Hi all, I'm brand new to the world of woodturning and after doing a course recently at Turners Retreat in the UK, I've gone and got myself a lathe and all the equipment I need. I used the Fingernail profiler on my course so I new it was easy to use so I've purchased one but I'm a little confused about step one of the set up. All the rest of it is clear but it's talking about packing either the jig or the grinder to 5 5/16 or 135mm to achieve the correct centre height. It then shows a diagram marking 135mm from the base where the grinder is set, to its centre. But what I don't understand is why it is this particular and specific height of 135mm. I have got myself an Axminster Workshop AW200WSG bench grinder and the centre of that is around 165mm. I know this probably just me not getting my head round it but any explanation or clarification would be gratefully received.

HI Murray, welcome to woodturning addiction I started with that fingernail jig but that was a long time ago I now use the ProEdge. I am fairly sure that the measurement you want is from the centre of the wheel to the base of the jig and the drawing is probably of a 6" wheel while the grinder you have is an 8". SO! what you need to do is measure 135mm down from the centre of the wheel and the base of the jig needs to be there I had the Record Power 8" and I remember having a plywood packing piece to set the jig to the right height. with the numbers you have given you will want a 30mm packing piece under the jig to make it 135mm below centre. Hope that makes sense. That 80 grit wheel will remove metal quite quickly, I am sure Turners Retreat will have taught you the basics of sharpening, keep the stone flat (stone dressing tool) and use a light touch equal on both wings then just run over the nose of the gouge, you are looking to achieve a straight wing running into the nose, if you start to develop a hollow (hook) between nose and wing you are not taking enough off the nose.

Pete, you an absolute star! I think I get it now. My stone dressing tools arrive tomorrow and I was taught a tip at Turners retreat about marking the end of a gouge with a sharpie and ensuring to grind only enough to take that off.
Thanks again.

You are very welcome, I am not employed by Robert Sorby but look after this forum if I don't know the answer I can call in the experts! I use a lot of their turning tools so have a good foundation and am happy to answer any questions as quickly as I can, though these days there are not many and my job is mostly deleting spam! You can also find me over on YouTube where in amongst other stuff I show some tools etc. Pete
