I picked up a piece of a tree that had been cut down from an abandoned home not far from where I live I brought it home let it dry for about a year and decided to finally do something with it.So I chainsawed a blank of it and chucked it up on the lathe and much to my dismay I noticed my tool a large roughing gouge immediately begin to turn black I thought this was peculiar so I stopped for a closer look and I noticed that the sap Discoloring the metal and when I looked even closer I see that it had begun to pit so I quickly took the blank off of the machine and immediately cleaned everywhere that wood chips had touched I guess my take away from this is the careful what you turn apparently some types of wood contain a sap that I would guess is high in acid very high and will rapidly dissolve metal.I have been turning wood on and off now for years and I’ve never seen anything like this happen or even hear of it.so I thought I would give everyone a heads up apparently not every species of wood lens itself to be turned into beautiful things.I have no idea what species this was because the people that lived in the home are long gone but I still do have the chunk of lumber and I will try to identify it and let you know what it is.

It would be good to identify the wood if you can, well done on spotting it quickly and cleaning up everything! I have never come across that problem but have had various "exotic" as in non native timbers from garden trees over the years.
