I have a couple of questions about use of an early fingernail jig. The jig looks like a 445 but the base is made from channel iron with two mounting holes and a single cross hole for the rod assembly that holds the tool holder. The tool holder has the adjustable collar. It is mounted on a sharpening station equipped with 7" diameter pink wheels. The jig was purchased about 22 years ago but has been in storage for last 20 years. I doubt the tool holder angle or collar has ever been changed from the factory setting. I no longer have the mounting instructions but as a reference the edge of the base is mounted 1" from the wheel face. I think the base is shorter then the 445 and this puts the center of the rod of the rod assembly 2 1/2 inches from the face of the wheel. The base of the jig is mounted about 5 3/8" below the center of the wheel. Please note if you can help me you are talking to someone that has not turned in over 20 years and even then was just starting.
1) The Sorby bowl gouges I want to sharpen on this jig have a 60 degree angle when measured from the bottom of the flute. When placed in the fixture with a 2" extension they match the angle of the wheel face. I do not know if this is the angle of the factory grind or the result of using this fixture. The chisels are also 20+ years old with very little use. As a beginner, should I keep this angle or change the extension to change the angle to something else? I know people use different angles to suit their turning style but I do not have the experience to make that kind of decision.
2) I would also like to use this fixture to sharpen an Ellsworth gouge. I understand there is ProEdge long Grind jig adapter available that could be used for this purpose. I would like to know if it would work with my jig. My jig is 1 1/2" between the 1/2" diameter rod and the hole for the tool holder.
Thanks in advance for any guidance you can provide.
