I brought a New Pro Edge last week and after I unboxed it, found that I was unable to lower the Sharpening Belt Assembly. The cause was because the capacitor was blocking the screw that secures the rear cover on the belt assembly. Also it was almost impossible to fit the power cord plug as the capacitor was in the way. I managed to loosen the two plastic and two stainless zip ties securing the capacitor to the motor which gave me enough clearance to lower the belt assembly and insert the power cord. Unfortunately the capacitor now sits at a slight angle because the electrical cable connecting the capacitor to the motor is very short. Not a huge big deal but considering the price of the Pro Edge a little annoying. The capacitor on my machine looks to be a lot larger than any I have seen in any online videos or photo's. Other than this minor problem ,its a very impressive machine.

Thanks Pete.
I am located in Vancouver Canada so I am wondering if this is a safety mod for the Canadian market. The capacitor is black 6” long and 1-7/8” dia ,with end caps that are 2-1/4” dia.
Paul.

Clive will have the answer, he doesn't work at 2am though :-) Hi Paul, I’m nearby in Surrey, BC. My ProEdge is from Rockler in the US it is dated October 2018. The capacitor on my is about 3-11/16” wide. It is held in place with just one white plastic tie strap. I can even slide it left and right and it doesn’t interfere with the plug at all. If your capacitor is 6” long then you likely have the wrong part on it. My capacitor is a Ducati Energia and is made in Romania. I think your unit may had some repair done to it.

I got it last week brand new from KMS Tools in Coquitlam. I am thinking that this maybe is a safety requirement mod for the Canadian market. Maybe what appears to be a large black capacitor is actually a protective housing for the normal capacitor that comes with the Pro Edge. The caps on either end of it say ‘made in Canada’ I registered the product on line with Robert Sorby and sent them a note about the capacitor but heard nothing from them.

Here is a photo of the capacitor with the original two stainless and two plastic Zip/Cable ties. At this point I had manage to slide it to the left to clear the bolt head on the rear cover of the grinding belt assembly, but there is a lot of upward pressure on the cable plug and the cable to the motor is under tension.

Hi Paul Vancouver B.C....Thank you for your posting...Your assumption is correct about the Canadian market and so is the information from cdnwoodturner and Pete about their own machines, all for various reasons... The capacitor on cdnwoodturners machine is the original setup from our factory for a 110v USA/Canada model The capacitor you see in the videos is on our UK 240v machine, which is smaller than the 110v version and why Pete relates to it as it is the same as his The reason yours is slightly different again, is that KMS make their modifications for their own specifications to the our standard Canadian version that leaves our factory,
I hope this clears the quandary why each machine looks slightly different

Hi Clive
Thanks for clearing this up.
I think KMS should be checking their modification work a little more thoroughly though.
I have had the Pro Edge just over a week now, its very impressive.
Cheers.
Paul.

Hi Clive Thanks for clearing this up. I think KMS should be checking their modification work a little more thoroughly though. I have had the Pro Edge just over a week now, its very impressive. Cheers. Paul. The size of the capacitor that you have on there is ridiculous. There is no big difference between capacitors or power tools for the US and Canadian markets. KMS Tools is a excellent place and very supportive of the community of woodturners and woodworkers. I think somebody just put an oversized one on there due to an oversight or some nanny state regulation. I would be shocked if they did that at the KMS Tools store and it must just come to them that way. The important thing is that you were able to slide it to the side and get it working. Once you plug it in you won’t have to do it ever again so now you can enjoy using the tool. In 10-20 years when that capacitor fails you can put a smaller one on as they are very cheap parts at any bearing or motor shop. I’m glad you like the tool and you will no doubt find that it is easy to use. Not that it is needed but for future reference you can get the diamond belt from the U.S. shipped to your door by Hartville Tools as no one seems to carry it in Canada.

I just spoke to the guy at KMS who does the capacitor mods, it is a CSA Canadian safety requirement.
I made them aware of the problems I had encountered.
The guy at KMS was very friendly and helpful I am sure my minor problems were just a one off.

Nice one Paul, I suspect the mod was done by someone who didn't understand the tools use, you have helped all future Canadian purchasers.
