So, just to start things off.
The joining strip on all sanding belts I have tried cause quite a 'bounce' as it passes the chisel. Any suggestions for dealing with it ? Does it really matter ?

Graham,
Welcome to the forum. Are these belts from a Robert Sorby dealer? The seam on Robert Sorby belts is as thin possible. It is butt-joined and the seaming tape is the thinnest in the industry. If you're using belts from another supplier that are lap-seamed, the bounce will be a problem, but from our belts, the bit of a bump you get from them won't cause you any problems.

Some are Sorby, some are not. I will compare them and see.

Hi
I am experiencing the same bounce using Sorby belts. I was just reading the ad in the latest issue of Woodturning Design on page 7 the lower two photos show what looks like about 1/16th pad of some sort. I went to check my Pro Edge and the belt rides on steel. I bought mine in February 2014 is this a recent up grade or something left out during assembly.

I have gone back and tested both types of belt I have and they are the same. i.e. sorby belts bouncing as well. I also have nothing between the steel plate and the belt, is there supposed to be something there Jeff ?

No, there's nothing between the platen (the steel plate) and the belt. Which grit belts are bouncing?

I am pretty new to the Proedge, using the belts that came with it and additional ones I ordered with it, they all seem to "bounce" aswell. I would describe it as more of a slap, especially on a skew.
I too was wondering if it was normal?

I've got both Sorby belts and those made by a 3rd party and none of them slap to any degree that it affects the performance of the machine.

I don't know that it does affect the sharpening Rob, but there is a definite 'knock' each time the join in the belt passes under the chisel. I don't really see that there is anything to be done about it anyway
