The following applies to both Desktop Grinders and Belt Grinders I do not know if the there is a spark problem with CBN wheels. I assume there is. There are lots and lots of discussions and pictures on Dust collection, but few address the problem of grinder dust collection. At least I can not find them.
On the AAW forum John Lucas expressed a concern for grinder dust collection back in Dec 29,2011 and Jan 1,2012, which generated a lot of discussion which pointed out a number of problems. One problem is the possible fire hazard of hot metal sparks igniting the vacuum hose. Also, a lot of sparks land on the tabletop and minute sparks become airborne.
In the threads Mark Mandell described a Water Filter that he has been using. A number of turners mentioned they are using it. I have not found anything on the hot spark problem on any other forums or the internet. I dis find one mention of using a Stainless steel kitchen scrubber pad as a vacuum hose filter, but I do not remember where I saw it.
Any ideas for the Robert Sorby ProEdge Sustem? The opening under the belt catches a lot of sparks, but not all. There are a lot of sparks flying off the higher portesion of the belt when using the Fingernail Profiler Jig.
One possible solution may be mounting the Proedge on a perforated platform similar to what some woodworkers use as a vacuum sanding table.
What does the Sorby suggest, a vacuum chamber under the opening with a dedicated vacuum system? They must have had some idea when the designed the base plate.
