Hi Barry I. Sorby was a member of the Sorby clan (no prizes for that one!), but not actually anything to do with the company Robert Sorby. You can find out more about Robert Sorby and it's heritage including I. Sorby and others on our website where we have a historical guide. Please follow this link www.robert-sorby.co.uk/resources/literature/robert-sorby-history.htmlWe hope you find it interesting. If you want t send a picture of the tool in please do to sales@robert-sorby.co.uk Many thanks Rob

Looking at the pictures I think these are carbon steel not HSS however that is just a guess, I will ask Clive to intervene for a better answer.

Hi Seadoo42...The tools you have could potentially be around 40+ years old looking at the style of handle and as Pete has said they look like Carbon steel...This period in woodturning tool manufacture was the start of when HSS was just beginning to come into use
The easiest way to tell if they are Carbon or HSS is when sharpening them the sparks produced by each type of steel is very different
If the sparks and yellow/orange and extinguish quickly then it is HSS...if they are very flowery, bright sparks like fireworks then it is carbon steel
I hope this information is useful
