This is mostly for Ken / Phoneman.
I have been looking at Harry Potters wand, and this is how I would go about it!!!
Timber needed is Holly, which isn't the easiest to get hold of... and you will need to find a tree!
The wand is most practically made in 2 parts, the handle is obviously supposed to be the branch but if you turned the taper from that you will have problems with the pith. So I would get out and find a tree and look for a small section to make the handle from, this will be mostly luck but a bit of carving could make something a bit similar very similar... cut it with enough length to get it in the chuck and part off behind the end bur. drill a straight mortise.
Second part you want a quarter sawn piece of holly about 13" long cut the 2 part taper on that and a tenon on the end.
Join the two and ensure the finished piece is 15" long.
Finish with sanding sealer and I would choose lemon oil.
Don't forget the all important box.

Do you know where I can buy one of these? Your local woodturner would probably be able to make one for you, obviously it wouldn't be an exact copy of the one in the movies as that would incur copyright charges but wands can be made. Where are you based? see if there is someone close to you up for the challenge.
