Well I popped down to the show at Yandles yesterday (Yandles is a tool and timber yard in Martock, Somerset) Robert Sorby was as usual represented, and I couldn't resist buying myself a new Excelsior Spindle Gouge 3/8" un-handled and spent a further 40p at the Ashley Isles stall on a brass ferrule (well actually bought a few as I usually do, then lose them before I use them ) Got home and shamelessly copied the Sorby handle shape in an interesting piece of timber, it was a barn door for a few hundred years, I turned it into a table and this is from one of the off cuts, picture shows my new gouge with its new handle an a piece of the timber it was made from. I don't know what you all think of the excelsior range, I have a feeling I sharpen on average about 30% less often with them, which gives a theoretical tool life of 30% longer and a productivity bonus too as more time is cutting wood not sharpening metal. Anyhow, figured this forum was too quiet, so I would post something... This is not yet another gouge, I am seriously going to throw out my old one which has only 15mm of flute left before it is just a piece of bar! but I do now have 1/4" 3/8" and 1/2" Sorby spindle gouges so it is probably a bit extravagant Pete

Thanks Clive, I have decided that as a turner I should make all handles or other wooden parts, The Sorby handle shape and usually the size is spot on, so I basically rip them off, and as a private joke to myself I also put the decoration rings on them I am 85% sure this one is Elm, but it is so old it is hard to tell bought it for the colour and the plank width, 22" x 3"
