Hello there. I'm very keen to get a diamond belt for my Proedge but I'm aware that they were temporarily withdrawn by Sorby because of some quality issues. I respect them for that decision.
Does anyone know if there is any information about if or when they are likely to be re-released? Many thanks.

Hi Mikeh
We hope to have some very good news soon about the diamond belts. The supplier has been testing it and says the root cause of the issue has been identified so hopefully we'll have some positive news about the reintroduction of this popular item very soon. Of course we don't want to reintroduce it until we're sure the quality is back to the original standard.

Hi there Robert (assuming you are still monitoring this forum) I wondered if you have any update yet about the re-availability of these diamond belts? Many thanks Mike Mike, I don’t know where you are located or if these are old belts but Hartville Tools in the USA is still selling the Sorby diamond belts: www.hartvilletool.com/product/5617/robert-sorby-proedge-systemIt does seem to be a bit odd that many dealers in North America of the Sorby PE do not seem to carry the diamond belt. Maybe it is because of the price that it is a slow seller or perhaps there just isn’t a lot of demand for it. I was thinking about buying one so wanted to pass this along. I do wonder if they will offer a CBN belt at some point like Axminster does although my limited understanding leads me to believe that diamond belts or wheels can do much more.

Diamond belts were withdrawn due to manufacturing quality issues, but that is all now resolved and Diamond belts should be available from all dealers, though due to the low turnover and high price you may find that they need to be ordered.
I am tempted, the reviews are great, and the belts are washable so very long lasting. However I mostly sharpen HSS and not high carbon so it would be luxury rather than necessity.

I did buy one once they became available last Autumn (bought mine from Yandles who do stock them). On the whole I am very pleased with it - sharpening is very quick, sharpness is very good, the tools don't overheat as they do when using the regular belts, and you can also do reshaping (with a bit of patience) as the rate of material removal is pretty good.
One minor issue is that I seem to get a lot of bounce on the belt - more so than other belts - maybe because it is thicker and more stiff than the other belts. Also I do get a bit of "knocking" when the join in the belt goes under the tool - although this may be my fault for pressing the tool to hard onto the belt, which the instructions specifically warn against. This knocking has, over tie, resulted in some wear on the part of the belt just before the join - also probably my fault.
So overall my opinion is maybe a 9/10. I do recommend it as a good luxy=ury for you Pete Best regards Mike

Hi mikeh...Glad to see that you enjoy using your Robert Sorby ProEdge Diamond belt and thank you for your recommendation...
The bounce and knocking you mention certainly sounds like excessive forward pressure. We all get used to leaning on on tool when sharpening on a bench grinder etc and it takes a while to find that we don't need to do that with the ProEdge.
I appreciate your honesty in saying that both of these issues are possibly your fault...thank you
All ProEdge belts are high quality, spliced jointed linishing belts designed to do their specific job on steel...
To get the best from your belts...slowly push the tool towards the belt and once the tool is touching the surface, hold the tool at that position allowing the abrasive to work, in the same way sandpaper works on the surface of wood.
