I'm new at turning but bought the Patriot chuck, actually two for a Grizzly 462 lathe which works very well. The issue I have, with the insert adapter for the 1 inch drive in the chuck, the chuck itself unwinds doing end work, from the insert creating a dangerous condition by getting lose on the drive. I tighten as hard as I can using the tools provided but it still occasionally happens. What am I doing wrong? The chuck itself and the jaws are great and I have a full set of Sorby HSS tools.

Hi mowoodturner...If the lathe is rotating forwards (towards you) then it is not possible for the insert or the chuck to unwind as it has a right hand thread so that it is always tightening against the rotation of the lathe. The only way it could come unwound if locking screws are not in place is if the lathe is running in reverse (away from you) then it could come unwound.

Thanks very much, the lathe does not have a reverse option, I will pay much closer attention as to what is happening (What I am doing) when it occurs again. I like the tools and chucks and chose them for my beginning into woodturning. The quality is very good, supported by this type of help from the experts.

Thank you Mr. Sorby, I greatly appreciate your response and am quite impressed that you take such a personal interest. It makes it quite clear why the tools are of such high quality.
Here is what I think happened, in my inexperience I have the lathe set at a lower speed as I learn various tool techniques. I forget to increase speed and I catch the tools and work which then unwinds the turning chuck because the work freezes a second (stops turning), but the lathe does not. thereby unwinding the chuck a turn or two. Higher speeds make turning easier after rounding but it takes self confidence to get there.
As an overall note, most videos rarely explain the speeds used at the time, they just explain techniques. Again, thank you.

mowoodturner, Do you have an experienced turner near you who can come take a look... what you describe really can't happen unless you are turning backwards... if you have a left handed lathe then yes there may be issues... but I really think for safety you should get someone to pop round and see what your setup is.
