Hi, all. Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending a three hour seminar ably done by Chris Pauncy of Sorby. It was an enjoyable and informative afternoon.
Several observations of note:
Chris introduced sharpening the way it should by, as just part of the process. No fuss, no muss, just sharpen early and often. He gave a thorough demonstration of the Pro Edge. I was impressed the way he mentioned other sharpening methods in a factual, gentlemanly manner. No negative ads.
Chris showed his extensive turning background in the way he just proficiently kept moving on. With thirteen students, we all had the opportunity to ask individual questions. I was impressed with the matter of fact way he discussed the difference between handled tools (which he uses at home) and the Sovereign System of detachable tools he uses while traveling.
I am not an active turner, although I have done a little over the years and hope to do so again. I had never seen the spiraling and detail tools Chris demonstrated.
He combined solid information with good humor. My one grumble was that the stools were very uncomfortable. Chris' humor helped overlook that.
If any of you have the opportunity of attending one of his seminars, I would highly recommend doing so.
